about

I was born and raised on a farm in South Dakota. I have realized that growing up on a South Dakota farm has profoundly shaped me and made me who I am today.

This song references one of the most famous true stories in South Dakota history. Wild Bill Hickok was playing poker at the #10 Saloon in Deadwood SD. He was shot in the back of the head while playing and the hand he was holding (two pair of aces and eights) is now known as the Dead Man's Hand. #10 Saloon is still operational in Deadwood and they have the chair that Wild Bill Hickok was (supposedly) sitting in when he was shot.
Calamity Jane was a contemporary of Wild Bill and she was apparently madly in love with him. She did in fact hope to avenge his death but she did in fact forget her gun. She suffered from alcoholism and by all reports was very skilled with firearms and horse riding. She is actually buried next to Wild Bill in the Deadwood area.

lyrics

LYRICS:
Aces of red and eights of black
Is a pretty strong hand
5 card stud should win out
Unless you get shot in the back

Chorus:
I was born in South Dakota
Don’t say I didnt warn ya
There’s a certain way we do things around here
As the cold blows thru your bones
A man knows he’s alone
When he understands the wind can smell your fear
I was born in South Dakota
Don’t say I didnt warn ya
I was born in South Dakota
I was born in South Dakota

Jane lived for the bottle
California and Bille were 3 things that haunted her soul
Madly in love with a boastful fool
Working a wild west show

Once Bill was dead She sought her revenge
But Calamity forgot her gun
To this day they lay side by side
Bill’s heart Jane still hasn’t won
